Optimizing workflows and processes with internal tools at SimilarWeb

SimilarWeb,2020

Intro

My role at SimilarWeb

I joined similarweb again in 2019 after leaving for 10 months to work on Google Search Console Insights. The company recruited me for a specific role as an individual contributor, so i’m able to work on multiple projects in various teams across the company.

My main focus was creating a new mental model and information architecture for the SimilarWeb platform, but I took some other tasks as well - working with new teams to create small-scale prototypes, creating internal tools for the organization and introducing user research methodologies to the design org.

In this section I shared with you 4 small projects I got to work on during the last year.

Ad composter tool

The brand design team approached me with a problem - they had many ppc and social campaigns to create graphics for, taking valuable time and attention.

They needed to automate and templetize these small tasks.

We explored several solutions, including teaching the PPC campaign creatoes to work with Sketch, but we needed a way of keeping consistency between different campaigners

Together we built a set of responsive templates and a web app for the content team to fill and export them.

All text are editable, we created a bank of images for the PPC folks to use.

Query bar prototype

We wanted to build the platform’s input component from scratch as a part of the redesign, and I felt it necessary to test a change in this scale that affect all pages in the platform with a working prototype before investing 2 months in its development and implementation.

This prototype is built using AngularJS and was tested with 50+ participants.

This is the original experience, what we had to build upon
We came up with an on-the-go approach reather than a full dialog, and still managed to maintain a single commit action per query

Illustration Hub

We had 3 illustrators working with us for 3 years on brand assets and other different projects, and we had tons of unused illustrations and compositions that were scattered around multiple sketch files.

We wanted these illustrations to be available and accessible from a single source of truth for the entire organization to be able to use.

The entire org. can search for an illustration, change key colors and download it to use on decks and documents.

Customer Experience Surveys

We wanted to send to high-paying accounts a survey that measures the learnability of our new platform after deploying a new page structure.

We needed to deploy our own user experience survey platform that looks and feels like a SimilarWeb experience we can email to premium customers.
